Do you know the origins of Mission-style furniture?
The concept of Mission Furniture began way back during the late 19th century in England when the furniture designer A.J. Forbes began to revolt against the cheap, shoddy furniture made during the Industrial Revolution by designing simple furniture with sturdy, solid construction. Characterized by clean, simple lines and geometric forms of modern furniture yet made from natural wood like oak, dark oak and cherry, Mission furniture often accompanied leather and natural fabrics in earth-tone colors. It gets its roots in history by furniture maker Joseph McHugh who first used the term "mission" in 1895 to describe the simplicity of the style.
The term "Mission" referred to the Spanish Missions throughout colonial California, although the design of most Mission Style furniture did not mimick these Spanish Missions in terms of style or furniture design.
Burress Amish Furniture specializes in fine solid wood Mission Style furniture and we have a full range of styles and hardwoods to choose from including quartersawn oak, red oak, cherry, maple, brown maple, walnut, rustic cherry and hickory.
